You can. In fact, I wouldn't wanna fight the postmaster without it.

You use the key to open the corresponding mailbox in strat for a chance at spawning the Postmaster (who drops good items)

Collect more postbox keys, open postboxes, and eventually spawn Postmaster Malown:
Postmaster Malown info about the keys in the comments there.
